Paw care during winter

When it gets cooler outside and the air drier, we simply protect our hands with gloves and apply hand cream regularly. Unfortunately, dogs cannot do this themselves, but are dependent on the help of their owners. Road salt, ice and snow lumps can cause fine cracks in the cornea and cause injuries to the paws. In order that your four-legged darling can enjoy the winter without paw injuries, we have listed the most important tips:

  • Avoid salt strewn paths if possible.
  • Before going for a walk, cream the paw pads with Vaseline or a special paw protection cream.
  • Cut off long, protruding fur between the toes so that no snow lumps can form there.
  • With a lukewarm paw bath after the walk you can remove small stones, road salt and ice lumps from the paws.
  • For very sensitive paws there are special dog shoes which should be worn.

If your dog is injured on the paws, a disinfectant and the application of an ointment will help. However, if he limps or has a bleeding and festering wound, you should consult a vet immediately.
