Tips and tricks for puppies

The apartment is puppy-safe, you have organized everything for the first equipment and now you also know how to behave on the first day (the whole report can be found here). However, there are other things you need to be aware of. We have compiled the most important tips and tricks for you.

Pick up at the breeder

The day has come when you can pick up your puppy from the breeder. Take some absorbent pads (such as Puppy Pads) with you, which you can lay out in the car in case the puppy gets sick during the ride, wet from nervousness or diarrhoea. The easiest way is to pick up the puppy with two people, so that one person can keep the puppy on his lap. Alternatively, you can use a transport box – but make sure it is well secured and does not slide back and forth in the car.

The first night

Especially in the first night it can happen that your puppy suffers from homesickness and makes itself noticeable with barking and howling. In order to avoid this, you can leave a blanket with the breeder a few days before the pick-up so that it can take on the smell of his family. Ideally, the blanket should be placed in the puppy’s bed, as this will have a calming effect. You can also simulate a heart with a ticking clock. Simply place the clock under the blanket in its basket. Although it doesn’t have the same rhythm, the constant ticking has a calming effect on the puppy and he can sleep better.

House-training the puppy

Dogs often show some behaviour before they have to pee. However, this behavior is not the same for all dogs. So it is important to stay alert and find out what kind of behaviour your puppy will adopt and, as soon as he shows it, take him outside immediately before he can do his business. However, until he is completely house-trained, you should give him a place to do his business. Should it go wrong, however, he should be placed outside immediately while you clean the spot. Patience is the key to house-training – for some dogs it can take several weeks.

The first educational measures

Although a puppy at this age does not yet have the longest attention span, it is still the most adaptive. For this reason, you should start raising your puppy right from the start. For example, you can train him to listen to his name by calling him when he approaches you. Or you can teach him where to go in and where not (e.g. in the bedroom).

The first walk

After your puppy has got used to you after a few days, you are welcome to make new contacts. Make sure, however, that not too many people storm him at once. And also with the first meeting with other dogs caution is necessary. It is best to clarify from a distance with the owner how the dog reacts to puppies, because not every dog is careful.

Even the little rascal needs some peace and quiet

Of course the joy of a new dog is still huge! But also the little one needs his rest and a break every now and then. That’s why he needs a little distance and rest from time to time so that you can enjoy him to the fullest again.
